Event Details

2017 marks the 250th anniversary of the death of one of the most astonishing composers the Western world has ever known: Georg Philipp Telemann. The genius of Telemann has been unjustly overshadowed by our fascination with his friend and contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach – likewise a tendency to interpret his music in the same reverent and religious spirit with which Bach is generally approached. But these two are apples and oranges: Where Bach looked heavenward, Telemann’s genius was for life here on Earth. In this programme, recorded by Masques for Alpha Classics, the ensemble wipes clean generations of misunderstanding to discover why Telemann was the most celebrated composer of his time. A brilliant observer of the world around him, his music translates all facets of human experience into works that are full of humour, wit and infinite invention, by turns astonishingly clever and breathtakingly tender. An autodidact who taught himself not only the art of composition but also how to play almost every instrument available, Telemann was a cosmopolitan before his time — well travelled, and insatiable in his appetite for ideas and material, be it nature, human nature, events, animals, literature, or culture. The result is a highly varied and dynamic music with a multicultural flare that predates Canada’s national experiment by 100 years!
